I start with the Bone Goober Goby because it gives me the right basic shape and a light base to work from.
I cut about 1/2 inch out of the middle, 1/4 inch between the dorsal fin and tail. and reconnect it with Mend-It, creating a shorter, more compact 1.75-inch, 3 gram sculpin profile. Cut the pec fins off and use Mend It to set them vertical, I rig it inverted, with the #6 hook exiting about 40–45% back from the front.
For color, I leave the Bone belly intact and use Chartpak Dark Olive across the head and back. I tested adding brown, and some of the other original colors, the olive alone gave me the contrast and natural sculpin look I wanted. Eyes painted black.
The finished Bone Sculpin is compact, dark on top, light underneath, tracks well near the bottom, and moves naturally in the current. The Goober Goby is the starting platform; the Bone Sculpin is the finished river bait
These baits work so well for Smallmouth if you know theyre heavy feeding on gobys in your area look. No further I get hit a lot on the drop as much as I do working the bait itself many rigs work well with it from drop shot to ned and even the hybrid “ ned shot” give it a try I’ve gotten pike drum and smallmouth on it so far !
