This is the brand new Road Toad, a solid-body, soft plastic plopping frog engineered from the ground up to cause huge commotion on the surface that no predatory fish can ignore.
The Road Toad is a top-water weapon designed to take absolute abuse in the slop while triggering violent, instinctive reactions.
Technical Geometry & Features
-
Molded "Plop-Plop" Paddle Feet: Unlike traditional buzz-toads with sideways-turned feet that merely bubble, the Road Toad features custom-engineered, swimbait style paddles that generate a rhythmic plopping sound. It mimics the high-attraction disruption of a hard prop bait in a completely weedless soft plastic profile.
-
Hydrodynamic Water-Channeling Keel: The belly of the toad is shaped with a specialized keel that stabilizes the bait during fast retrieves, preventing it from rolling over. The keel mechanically funnels water directly out the backside to maximize the rotational spray of the feet.
-
Contoured Weedless Hook Pocket: Designed to fit seamlessly with a 4/0 or 5/0 swimbait hook, every curve of the top deck serves to nestle your hook point perfectly flush. You can bomb this directly into the thickest lily pads and duckweed without fouling, yet get instant hook penetration on the strike. Since the Road Toad is already flat and wide, the slot on the keel isn't a traditional hook slot, but rather an indicator to help guide you in making sure it's rigged perfectly straight every time.
-
Dual-Action Sub-Surface Swimming: While poured with our signature floating plastic and designed to rule the surface on a straight retrieve, the solid-body density and wild, erratic paddle feet allows the Road Toad to double as a sub-surface swimbait. Kill the retrieve to let it swim down, or fish it low through heavy cover where traditional top water baits can't reach, all without having to tie on a different lure. As an added bonus, the Road Toad makes for a killer trailer for swim jigs, bladed jigs, spinnerbaits and more.
"I didn't often fish frogs before, hollow body or soft plastic. When I did, I'd usually end up getting my expensive hollow body baits throttled and stolen by a Northern Pike in the first few casts. But, there is no denying the exhilaration of violent top water frog strikes. So I made it my mission to design a soft plastic frog that had the imitating features of a hollow body, but made a ton of noise and commotion, and equally as important, didn't give me nightmares about having to explain to my wife why I have to buy 3 more $16 fishing lures.
I didn't know I wanted it to make that 'plop-plop' noise until I water tested the very first prototype and it kind of reminded me of a very popular hard body plopper bait. That's when I realized that was the sound I wanted, and I prototyped around 8 different leg and paddle designs before getting the perfect angle, shape and dimensions to consistently produce it." — Jeff, Owner & Maker
How to Fish the Road Toad
You don’t need any complicated techniques to unlock the magic of the Road Toad. Because the paddle feet are finely tuned to react to immediate water resistance, simply cast it out, and reel it straight in.
-
The Steady Burn: Keep your rod tip up and use a steady medium retrieve to establish that loud, rhythmic surface plop.
-
The Kill & Swim: Reel it over a pocket in the pads, stop your retrieve to let it submerge, and slow-roll it back out to trigger sub-surface strikes from wary fish.
